The African Action Congress (AAC) has issued a stern warning to the government regarding its lack of timely response to the ongoing protests that have gripped the nation for three consecutive days.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Femi Adeyeye, described the upcoming national broadcast by the President’s media office as an “insult” to the intelligence of the protesting citizens, emphasizing that any address that fails to prioritize the killings of peaceful protesters should be outrightly disregarded.
The AAC criticized the government for its quick actions in other matters, such as changing the national anthem and appointing ministers, contrasting these with the sluggish response to the protesters’ demands.
“A civil government would not take this long to communicate with its people,” Adeyeye stated, highlighting the urgency and gravity of the situation.
The statement pointed to alarming incidents of violence against protesters, with reports of killings and arbitrary arrests spanning across various states, including Delta, Kano, and Abuja. The AAC condemned the regime for its apparent indifference to the loss of innocent lives, particularly women and children caught in the crossfire of the protests. Adeyeye remarked,
“The human rights record of Tinubu in one year would make Buhari’s look pristine,” emphasizing the deterioration of civil liberties under the current administration.
In a show of solidarity with the protesters, the AAC outlined specific demands, including accountability from President Tinubu for the actions of his agents, the immediate dismissal of the Minister of FCT, Mr. Wike, for his role in suppressing protests, and accountability for the military and police involved in violent crackdowns.
The party called for the immediate release of detained protesters and compensation for victims of police brutality. “We can’t be protesting that we are hungry and still be killed on the streets like flies,” Adeyeye asserted, reinforcing the urgent need for government accountability and reform.
The AAC pledged to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Nigerian people, vowing to continue their fight for justice and human rights until true freedom is achieved.
