Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar has vehemently condemned the use of live ammunition on citizens peacefully protesting against bad governance in Kano and Abuja. Abubakar described the act as “utterly intolerable” and reminiscent of the dark days of military dictatorship, emphasizing that such actions by security forces exacerbate tensions and turn peaceful demonstrations into chaos.
He reminded the government and security agencies of their paramount duty to ensure a safe and secure environment where citizens can exercise their right to protest without fear. “When security forces open fire on innocent protesters, they do nothing but exacerbate tensions, transforming peaceful demonstrations into chaos,” Abubakar stated.
He expressed disbelief that inciting violence could be the intention of the authorities, urging them to respect the rights of citizens.
Abubakar called on the international community, including the United Nations and the International Criminal Court, to closely monitor the situation in Nigeria and hold the leadership and security apparatus accountable for their actions.
He reaffirmed his counsel to protesters to steadfastly exercise their right to peaceful protest while rejecting any form of violence.
Moreover, Abubakar stressed the importance of isolating and prosecuting those engaging in looting and the destruction of public and private property.
“By indulging in such acts, they undermine the legitimate protests and play into the hands of those who oppose their right to protest,” he added.
In a direct appeal to President Bola Tinubu, Abubakar urged him to demonstrate true leadership by immediately addressing and implementing the demands of the Nigerian people.
His call for action highlights the urgency of the situation and the need for responsible governance to navigate the nation through these turbulent times.
