Augustine Eguavoen has announced his resignation as the interim coach of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles.
This announcement comes just days after his appointment, succeeding the rejection of the role by Bruno Labbadia with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
Eguavoen’s brief tenure was marked by noteworthy performances, including a resounding 3-0 victory against the Benin Republic in Uyo, and a commendable draw against Rwanda.
Speaking to OwnGoal, Eguavoen expressed his pride in the team and gratitude towards the NFF, stating, “I have been given a mandate to handle two games. I will want to say I am very pleased with the boys and again thanks to the NFF leadership and all the boys supported me in terms of discipline and working hard.”
The coach’s departure was anticipated, as he was initially engaged for a specific mandate of two matches.
Reflecting on his short stint, he remarked, “It ends today, which is the two games mandate. I can’t talk about Libya because I haven’t been told but however I can talk about it a little bit in case we have another coach, we can talk about it.”
Eguavoen emphasized the importance of staying connected to the team, suggesting his willingness to offer insights for future matches, particularly against Libya.
“I want to be closer to the team as it should be and I can give inside story and inside information that we need to be able to overcome Libya,” he added.
Despite the brevity of his role, Eguavoen remains optimistic about the Super Eagles’ future. “No team is a pushover anymore but with this spirit that these boys have exhibited and from what I have seen, we have a very bright future,” he concluded.
