Renowned human rights advocate, Deji Adeyanju, has raised the alarm, describing this move as a troubling descent into fascism.
“While I recognize the fact that the Nigerian Police Force has the power to invite anybody in relation to ongoing investigations, it is, however, imperative to sound a note of caution, as it appears from the invitation letter, that the Nigerian Police Force has already reached a premeditated decision on Joe Ajero’s guilt,” stated Adeyanju.
Adeyanju further urged the Inspector General of Police to exercise restraint and caution his officers against actions that could escalate tensions in the country.
“We will not sit idle and watch Nigeria descend into fascism, the outcome of which no one can predict,” he warned.
The Nigerian Police Force recently issued a controversial letter inviting the President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajero, for an interview over allegations that include criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.
The letter, dated August 19, 2024, also ominously threatens arrest should Mr. Ajero fail to honour the invitation.
The situation remains tense as the nation watches closely, with many calling for transparency and fairness in the investigative process.
