The Natsinta community in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State has been severely affected by unprecedented flooding, submerging over 255 houses and displacing more than 1,000 residents.
The calamity, which struck after several days of torrential rainfall, has left the majority of those displaced being women and children.
The relentless downpour led to the inundation of mud-brick homes, leaving the community in a state of distress and uncertainty.
However, no lives have been reported lost, the flood has caused injuries to several individuals, who are currently receiving medical attention.
The village head of Dayebu Mai Ungwa expressed deep concern over the ongoing crisis, highlighting that their daily struggle for food has been further exacerbated by the recent flood disaster.
“We have no choice but to thank God for everything that has happened; thus, we have no reason to question His will,” he said.
He said about 250 houses had been affected, not including those damaged in the latest rainfall. He noted that four more houses have recently been submerged, and he has observed at least two that have been destroyed.
He appealed to the government for urgent assistance, requesting roofing sheets, cement, blocks, and financial aid to provide temporary shelter for the displaced residents.
In response, Mustafa Yusuf, the lawmaker representing Jibia State constituency in the State House of Assembly, visited the community and expressed his sorrow over the extensive damage.
He, however, assured the victims that the State Assembly will address the issue this week, with the aim of facilitating state government aid.
