The University of Ilorin is set to mark a significant milestone, celebrating its 50th anniversary with a series of activities slated for November 23rd to 28th, 2025.
This momentous occasion follows the approval by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, after a detailed presentation of the Golden Jubilee plans at the Principal Officers’ meeting on July 19, 2024.
The Golden Jubilee Planning Committee, chaired by Professor Olugbenga Mokuolu from the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, College of Health Sciences, is orchestrating a grand celebration to commemorate the university’s establishment by a decree of the Federal Military Government in August 1975.
This decree was a pivotal part of Nigeria’s Third National Development Plan, aimed at expanding opportunities for higher education and addressing the country’s demand for a skilled workforce.
Since its inception, the University of Ilorin has transformed from a modest institution into a beacon of academic excellence and innovation.
Recognized as the Most Outstanding Nigerian University of 2023, it has consistently been the top choice for admission seekers for over a decade and is highly regarded internationally.
The Golden Jubilee celebration is a time for reflection on the university’s rich history, achievements, and contributions to education and society. It is an opportunity to honor the founding fathers, past and present management, alumni, staff, and students who embody the university’s motto, “Probitas Doctrina.”
Established initially as a University College affiliated with the University of Ibadan in 1975, the University of Ilorin gained full autonomy in October 1977 under its first Vice-Chancellor, Professor O. O. Akinkugbe. From its humble beginnings with 200 students and 615 staff members across three faculties, the university now boasts 50,883 students in 16 faculties, supported by 3,625 teaching and non-teaching staff.
Over the past five decades, the University of Ilorin has produced notable alumni, including governors, vice-chancellors, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and influential figures who have significantly contributed to the development of Nigeria, Africa, and the world.
The 50th-anniversary celebrations promise to be a memorable event, highlighting the university’s journey of excellence and its vision for the future.
