The Military High Command has expressed concern over the planned nationwide protest against economic hardship in the country.
They labelled the protest as an open invitation to a state of anarchy and emphasized that they would not allow such chaos to befall the nation.
Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, addressed Defence Correspondents in Abuja, shedding light on the ongoing military operations against insurgency activities in the country. He stated, “The military is vigilantly monitoring the situation,” emphasizing that while citizens have the right to peaceful protest, they do not have the right to engage in violence.
Major General Buba also revealed that the organizers of the protest have ulterior motives, aiming to use it as an opportunity for hoodlums to hijack and escalate the situation, plunging the country into anarchy and making it ungovernable.
The military has identified critical public infrastructures, worship places, marketplaces, air and sea ports, among others, as potential targets of the planned protest. Major General Buba expressed concerns about the potential consequences, stating, “They want to create a state of war.” Drawing on the military’s experience in peacekeeping missions, he emphasized the devastating effects of war and the importance of maintaining peace in the country. Major General Buba urged citizens to consider the dire consequences and visit Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps to witness the effects of war firsthand.
Major General Buba called for peace and urged citizens to allow the federal government to address the current challenges and restore the nation’s prosperity. The military is committed to safeguarding the country and preventing any form of anarchy from taking hold.
