A tragic accident on the Third Mainland Bridge claimed the life of one person and left three others injured on Saturday morning.
According to a report, the fatal collision, involving a mini truck with registration number MUS 489 XS and a Toyota Camry (KRD 470 JD), occurred during a heavy downpour.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) attributed the cause of the accident to excessive speeding.
In a statement signed by Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA spokesperson, special adviser to the governor on transportation, Sola Giwa, confirmed the details of the incident.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident was caused by excessive speeding during a heavy downpour this morning,” the statement read.

Responding swiftly to the scene near the UNILAG waterfront, heading towards the Iyana-Oworonshoki area, LASTMA operatives managed to rescue three individuals from the wreckage.
Despite ongoing campaigns by the government to educate motorists about speed limits, the tragic event underscores the persistent issue of drivers ignoring the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.
Mr. Giwa urged all drivers, including commercial bus operators and private car owners, to adhere to speed limits, particularly on major roads like the Third Mainland Bridge. He emphasized that compliance with these regulations is crucial to prevent such devastating incidents.
Following the accident, officials from the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) promptly removed the deceased from the scene, and LASTMA personnel worked to clear the damaged vehicles, ensuring a smooth flow of traffic on the bridge.
Extending his condolences to the family of the deceased, Mr. Giwa stressed the importance of road safety and urged motorists to drive responsibly to avoid future tragedies.
