In a dazzling display of skill and determination, Lagos-based wigmaker, Helen Williams, has clinched the coveted Guinness World Record for crafting the longest handmade wig, measuring a staggering 351.28 meters (1,152 ft 5 in).
Helen’s 11-day labor of love, costing over N2 million (£2,031; $2,493), has catapulted her into the international spotlight, as the Guinness World Records proudly announced her remarkable achievement on Tuesday, November 14, 2023.
The meticulous construction involved a complex underlay of wig-cap netting and black fabric affixed to a bicycle helmet.
Helen then meticulously assembled the hairpiece using 1,000 bundles of hair, 12 cans of hair spray, 35 tubes of hair glue, and an impressive 6,250 hair clips.
Sharing insights into her groundbreaking creation, Helen emphasized the challenges faced in sourcing materials, affirming, “Finding the materials to make the longest wig was not an easy task. My experience as a wigmaker helped a lot.”
With an eight-year tenure as a professional wigmaker, Helen, who produces between 50 to 300 wigs per week, revealed, “I have trained hundreds of students and have made thousands of wigs.”
Despite her extensive experience, creating the record-breaking wig proved to be an arduous task.
“At some point, I felt exhausted. However, friends and family encouraged me. I did not want to let them down, so I maintained my focus. The outcome is the longest handmade wig in the world,” she expressed.
The main hurdle Helen faced was finding a suitable venue to lay out the wig for accurate measurement. Undeterred, she chose the sprawling Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway, a testament to her unwavering commitment to achieving the extraordinary.
Now residing in her office, Helen invites curious onlookers to marvel at her creation. Reflecting on her achievement, she shared, “It will take a while for me to digest. This achievement is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I still cannot believe it.”
