LAGOS, Nigeria — In a momentous announcement, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has unveiled plans for the ambitious $100 million African Film City project set to transform the landscape of the entertainment industry in Epe, Lagos State.
The groundbreaking ceremony is slated to commence in the forthcoming weeks, ushering in a new era for Nigerian cinema and creative talents.
The primary objective of this visionary project is to bolster the already flourishing creative sector by providing an environment conducive to artistic innovation.
Governor Sanwo-Olu has pledged to double financial and training support, signaling a significant commitment to nurturing and empowering local talent.
As part of this endeavor, aspiring filmmakers can anticipate increased grants for short stories, fostering the development of new and exciting narratives.
Governor Sanwo-Olu articulated, “Elevating the creative industry is our goal.”
This proclamation came during the 12th AFRIFF (Africa International Film Festival) Press Briefing, a gathering graced by esteemed industry veterans, prominent movie producers, and celebrated Nollywood stars.
Collaboration and unity within the entertainment realm were also emphasised during the announcement.
Governor Sanwo-Olu underscored the importance of showcasing Nigeria’s original content to the global stage, stating, “Together, we are committed to showcasing our original local content to the world.”
Notably, the event featured the esteemed presence of the U.S. Consul General, Mr. Will Stevens, signifying the international significance of this project.
Governor Sanwo-Olu conveyed the notion of seizing this “African moment” to play a pivotal role in the growth of Nollywood, Nigeria’s vibrant film industry.
In his closing remarks, the governor extended an invitation to all stakeholders, saying, “Let’s collaborate and tell our stories to the world.
“Together, we’ll put Lagos and Nigeria on the global filmmaking map.”
