The school fees for new students enrolling in federal government colleges, commonly known as federal unity schools, have been increased to N100,000 by the federal government.
This change in fees was implemented by the Federal Ministry of Education and communicated through an official circular from the Office of the Director of Senior Secondary Education Department, dated 25th May 2023, with reference number ADF/120/DSSE/I.
The circular was addressed to all principals of federal unity colleges.
Signed by the Director of Senior Secondary Education, Binta Abdulkadir, the circular, titled “Approved Fees/Charges for Federal Unity Colleges (1st Term) for New Students,” notified that the new students are now required to pay N100,000 instead of the previous N45,000.
The circular further explained that the fee increase would impact various aspects and activities of the school, encompassing tuition and boarding fees, uniforms, textbooks, deposits, exercise books, prospectus, caution fees, ID cards, stationery, clubs and societies, sports, extra lessons, insurance, and more.
In response to the sudden increment in school fees for federal unity schools, the Nigerian parents’ forum protested in June 2023.
They urged President Bola Tinubu to direct the Federal Ministry of Education to reverse the over 100% increase in fees, emphasising that it is insensitive and ill-timed, especially considering Mr. Tinubu’s promise to alleviate the burdens of parents facing economic challenges due to the removal of fuel subsidies.
Subsequently, in July, the House of Representatives directed the Federal Ministry of Education to revert back to the old school fees for federal unity schools.
