Sani Yerima, the former governor of Zamfara State, has suggested that the administration led by Bola Tinubu should initiate discussions with local terror groups, commonly known as bandits, operating in the North-west region.
Yerima made this statement during a press briefing following his meeting with President Tinubu in Abuja.
He emphasized that the current government should undertake a dialogue process similar to the one that resulted in the successful amnesty programme for militants in the Niger Delta during the Umar Yar’Adua administration.
“These individuals are Nigerians, and I believe that the Nigerian military and other security agencies possess the capability to effectively address them if given the necessary directives, resources, support, and political determination.
“However, I believe that we should avoid the collateral damage associated with their actions.
“In the past, the late President Umaru Yar’Adua engaged in a similar dialogue with militants from the Niger Delta, and it yielded positive results,” he stated.
