A member of the the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Akinlabi Akinnaso, has been killed in Ondo State.
According to a report , the strong PDP member was shot and killed by a security guard as a result of the delay in the release of the election results from last Saturday.
The report unveiled that the party member was shot at a close range at the INEC collation center in the Owena Ayetoro, Idanre, area of the state.
He is alleged to have argued with the security personnel about how long INEC had taken to declare the results of the presidential and national assembly elections.
Eyewitness account said that, “lt was unexpected, the man came to the centre and complained that the INEC officials were unnecessarily delaying the announcement of the results of the Saturday election.
”He was not armed and not a thug as they are now claiming. He a complete gentleman.
”He was a staunch supporter of the party’s House of Representatives candidate Festus Akingbaso.
”As he was talking with the security personnel, the next thing we heard was a gun shot. He was shot at close range by one of the security personnel.
“The gunshot, caused confusion, as the people at the collation centre scampered for safety and by the time normalcy returned to the scene, we met him dead on the floor.
“The collation exercise was delayed for hours following the killing of the innocent man.”
Funmi Odunlami, a police spokeswoman, claimed to have heard the information but was unable to corroborate it.
Odunlami begged for more time to look into the situation.
Oyeyemi Oyediran, the state’s police commissioner, has in the meanwhile urged the populace to uphold calm till the results of the general elections are announced.
The person who delivered the advise, Oyediran, praised the state’s residents for their behavior during the preliminary voting for the ongoing general elections.
Considering that the Independent National Electoral Commission will declare the results after tallying them, he pleaded with the populace to keep the calm.
The police chief praised them for their patriotism and the degree of organization they demonstrated during the voting process, which ensured a calm procedure.
Also, he urged candidates to behave with sportsmanlike respect and warned their supporters/fans not to stir up any disturbance while they awaited the announcement of the election results.
