The Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomosoland, Sheikh Teliat Yunus Ayilara, has delivered a stern message to Alh Basit Aponle Anobi, “the son” of the late revered Islamic scholar, Sheikh Muyideen Bello.
During his Friday sermon, the Chief Imam urged Aponle Anobi to emulate the distinguished legacy of his father, emphasizing the importance of continuing the late cleric’s spiritual path.
Reflecting on the life and contributions of Sheikh Muyideen Bello, the Chief Imam praised the late scholar as a paragon of virtue, known for his roles as a teacher, preacher, and philanthropist.
“In his lifetime, our spiritual father, Alhaji Muyideen Bello, was renowned for his good deeds. He served as a teacher, preacher, and philanthropist, and his legacy of righteousness is well known to all. Therefore, anyone who claims to be his child must strive to embody and uphold these virtuous qualities,” Ayilara stated.
Expressing concern over Aponle Anobi’s career choice as a musician, the Chief Imam questioned its alignment with the late Sheikh’s values.
“It raises moral concerns for the child of such a distinguished scholar to pursue a career in music. Musicians have their own path, but if you are truly his son, you should continue his legacy by spreading and preaching the words of Allah, not music,” he added.
Drawing a parallel with the story of Prophet Noah from the Holy Qur’an, Ayilara underscored the reality that a child might deviate from the righteous path set by their parent.
“This story illustrates that a biological connection does not guarantee that a child will follow their parent’s path. While many may attain paradise through the teachings and deeds of Alhaji Muyideen, his own children risk missing that path if they deviate from his legacy.”
The Chief Imam concluded with a reminder to uphold the fear of God as exemplified by the late Sheikh. “If you are truly his son, you must embody the fear of God, as exemplified by the late Sheikh.”
This message serves as a call to Aponle Anobi, and others, to honour the legacy of their forebears through righteous deeds and adherence to the path of faith.
