In a decisive move to ensure public safety during the holiday season, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has imposed a ban on the use of firecrackers, popularly known as knockouts, for the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations. The measure aims to prevent panic, fire outbreaks, and accidents that often arise from the indiscriminate use of fireworks.
Announcing the ban, SP Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer, emphasized the risks involved. Quoting the FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, she stated, “The use of these items can lead to unnecessary anxiety within the community and poses significant risks, including fire hazards.”
The Police warned that anyone found selling or using firecrackers would be arrested and prosecuted. The Command urged community leaders and residents to spread awareness of the dangers associated with fireworks.
To facilitate enforcement, the Command shared emergency hotlines—08032003913, 08061581938, and 07057337653—for reporting violations or any suspicious activities.
SP Adeh reinforced the Police’s commitment to a safe festive season, saying, “The FCT Police Command remains committed to maintaining law and order during the festive period,” while encouraging residents to celebrate responsibly.
This proactive measure highlights the importance of safety over tradition, as the authorities seek to prevent harm and ensure a peaceful holiday season for all.
