Ahead of the Ondo State Gubernatorial elections set for Saturday, November 16, 2024, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has announced robust security measures to ensure a peaceful and transparent voting process.
The police chief has appointed Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) Sylvester Abiodun Alabi to oversee all security operations during the election as the designated DIG Elections. Working alongside him are Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) Bennett Igweh and Commissioner of Police (CP) Tunji Disu, who will help coordinate and implement comprehensive security strategies.
To maintain order throughout the electoral period, the IGP has enforced a restriction on all vehicular movement from 6 am to 6 pm on Election Day, with only essential services such as ambulances, fire services, and accredited media personnel allowed passage. The police have also issued strict guidelines, barring security aides and escorts from accompanying VIPs to polling and collation centers. “Unauthorized security personnel and quasi-security agencies will not be permitted to operate during the election,” the statement reads, emphasizing that sirens are banned on unauthorized vehicles during the election period.
In a gesture of inclusivity, the police assured accessibility for individuals with disabilities, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and those with mobility challenges to polling stations. This measure is aimed at ensuring every eligible citizen can participate in the electoral process comfortably and safely.
The Nigeria Police Force has established election-specific lines for inquiries and reporting incidents, which will be publicized shortly. The police urge citizens to report any suspicious activities that could compromise the electoral integrity.
“The Nigeria Police Force reaffirms its commitment to fostering a safe and democratic environment as the state gears up for the elections,” said ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer.
The IGP has further announced that the Police will collaborate with military and other federal security agencies, underscoring the need for collective stakeholder efforts to guarantee a fair, peaceful, and credible election in Ondo State.
