Amnesty International has issued a strong condemnation regarding the brutal killing of at least 15 individuals by an emerging armed group known as Lakurawa.
The attack, which took place on November 8th in Mera, located in the Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State, caused loss of lives and properties, including stealing of livestock.
Witnesses recount that the assault occurred as residents were preparing for Jumaat prayers, leaving the community vulnerable during this sacred time.
Eyewitnesses reported that townspeople attempted to defend themselves against the armed assailants. Disturbing videos have surfaced showing members of the Lakurawa group advocating for the strict implementation of Shari’ah law within the region.
Furthermore, reports from surrounding villages in Sokoto and Kebbi reveal a troubling pattern of behavior from the group, which has been invading communities and forcibly collecting ‘zakat.’ For over a year, the area has been under siege by bandits, particularly in Sokoto State and Zamfara, where they have engaged in a relentless campaign of violence—killing, abducting, and raping women, while also imposing heavy levies on farmers.
Amnesty International’s call to action highlights the urgent need for accountability and protection for the affected communities, as the cycle of violence continues to devastate lives and livelihoods across the region.
