Covenant University is taking proactive steps to address character and leadership challenges among Nigerian youth through its leadership development programmes, according to Dr David Oyedepo, the institution’s Chancellor.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday, Oyedepo said the university has established Africa-focused leadership development centres to equip students with vital skills.
“Covenant is solving character problems among the young people in unmistakable terms,” he said, adding that the programme’s positive impact has been evident in Covenant University’s position as the Nigerian institution with the most employable graduates.
The university recently introduced online diploma and certificate courses in leadership to address Nigeria’s leadership gaps.
“Leadership development studies equipped graduates with the skills and competencies required to proffer solutions to myriads of problems,” Oyedepo noted, urging other universities to consider setting up similar initiatives.
The chancellor pointed out that Covenant’s commitment to remodelling youth behaviour extends beyond academic achievement, focusing on building responsible, solution-oriented leaders. “The university is succeeding in positively remodelling the behaviour pattern of youths through the leadership development centre,” he said.
Dr Oyedepo encouraged Nigerian universities to emulate Covenant’s model, establishing centres that would help meet the nation’s leadership needs by fostering critical skills and values in students.
