On October 29, the House of Representatives advanced a pioneering bill that will allow military participation in food production, a strategic move aimed at enhancing food security and diversifying the nation’s economy.
Sponsored by Babajimi Benson (APC, Lagos), this legislation proposes the establishment of Armed Forces Farms and Ranches designed to significantly boost agricultural output.
Benson articulated the rationale behind the initiative, stating, “This initiative aims to leverage military resources to reduce dependence on oil revenues and address food security challenges.”
He emphasized that military farms have traditionally existed to support personnel, but this new scheme seeks to utilize the military’s extensive land holdings without necessitating new land acquisitions.
The plan will integrate crop production with livestock and aquaculture, fostering collaboration with various government agencies.
The expected outcomes of this initiative are substantial. It is projected to stabilize food prices, create jobs, and impart essential agricultural skills, thereby contributing to local economies and overall economic growth.
Benson also highlighted a critical connection between food insecurity and unrest in the country, arguing that military engagement in agriculture could play a pivotal role in combating crime and enhancing stability.
