As the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah escalates, the Federal Government of Nigeria has initiated evacuation procedures for its citizens residing in Lebanon.
In a statement, the government emphasized, “The Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu’s Government is committed to the safety and wellbeing of its citizens, making it the top priority.” In light of the deteriorating security situation in Lebanon, the government has activated emergency protocols to facilitate a swift and safe evacuation of its nationals back home.
Currently, approximately 500 Nigerians have registered with the country’s Mission in Lebanon; however, it is estimated that over 2,000 Nigerian citizens reside in the country. The statement urged all citizens living in Lebanon not to resist evacuation, highlighting the potential for the ongoing conflict to escalate.
“We appeal for cooperation with the evacuation process,” the statement read.
Furthermore, the government provided safety guidelines for citizens to follow during this tumultuous time. It expressed gratitude for the remarkable understanding shown by the international community and reassured citizens that it will continue to monitor the situation closely.
