Abuja’s vibrant nightlife has been rocked by the arrest of Raymond Terver, popularly known as DJ Ice.
The Nigerian police apprehended the disc jockey for orchestrating an elaborate fraud that allegedly netted him over N8 million through fake payment alerts. This audacious scheme, which began in June 2024, involved purchasing expensive goods, particularly premium drinks, without parting with a dime in real currency.
Force Spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi detailed the unfolding of DJ Ice’s deceptive practices. The scheme was uncovered when DJ Ice attempted to buy drinks from a hotel using a fraudulent alert in August 2024.
“The suspect was arrested in August 2024 for purchasing goods using fake payment alerts. He admitted to starting this scheme in June 2024, ordering expensive drinks, particularly Hennessy XO, from the ‘For You’ Hotel and Restaurant in Jabi, Abuja,” Adejobi stated.
DJ Ice’s modus operandi was as cunning as it was simple. Utilizing the Paint App on his computer, he generated fake receipts, which he then sent through WhatsApp. To further shield his identity, he employed dispatch riders to collect the drinks, using intermediaries to distribute them.
“He would send fake payment receipts via WhatsApp, arrange for a dispatch rider to collect the drinks, and then send them through intermediaries to conceal his identity,” Adejobi added.
Facing the media, DJ Ice expressed remorse while citing pressing economic struggles as his motivation.
“The reason I decided to go down this path is because of the hardship we are facing. I was eager to make money and acquire DJ equipment for myself,” DJ Ice explained.
He elaborated on his tactics, saying, “I found the restaurant through Google, contacted them, and fabricated a receipt on my computer using the Paint App.”
He also mentioned using a dispatch rider to facilitate the collection of goods.
In a separate but equally troubling development, the police also paraded Kayode Johnson, alias Baddoo, who stands accused of murdering a police officer in Ogun State and absconding with his AK-47. Johnson confessed to leading a gang of robbers, marking another significant arrest by the police.
Force Spokesperson Adejobi emphasized the police’s ongoing efforts to combat crime, noting that 295 armed robbery suspects and 186 kidnappers had been apprehended in the past month alone. This string of arrests highlights a determined and proactive law enforcement drive to restore safety and order across the nation.
