In preparation for the 2024/2025 academic session, the management of Landmark College, Ikorodu, recently organized an intensive two-day training program for its staff.
Focused on enhancing teaching strategies, delivery methods, and customer service, the sessions aimed to equip the staff with the skills necessary to maintain and build upon the college success.
The training, themed “Building on LC Success Trajectory,” featured key sessions led by Mr. Babatunde Kolade, CEO of XGEE Consulting, and Dr. Nelson Ayodele, CEO of Standard Mandate International (SMI).
These sessions included an interactive discussion on the remarkable achievements of students in the recent WASSCE and IGCSE examinations, where teachers shared the effective strategies they employed.
In his opening address, the college Chairman, Mr Isiaka Oyebamiji, urged the teachers to sustain and enhance these achievements.
“Do not relent,” he emphasized, encouraging staff to intensify their efforts.
Mr. Babatunde Kolade’s session delved deeply into curriculum concepts, emphasizing its components and their impact on classroom activities.
“Understanding the curriculum enables a teacher to deliver successfully in class,” he explained.
Kolade highlighted essential components of the curriculum, including content, delivery methods, resources, teachers, and assessment.
“The content is what the teacher aims to teach, and mastery of this is crucial,” he noted.
He further elaborated on delivery methods, advising that they should align with the lesson’s objectives through techniques such as real-life exposure, practical activities, and excursions.
“The appropriate selection of resources, including textbooks, internet, and audiovisual materials, is crucial for effective lesson delivery. Additionally, evaluating the lesson outcomes is essential to determine if the set objectives have been met.
“Individual teaching pedagogy, the science of teaching, is crucial in lesson delivery,” he added.
Kolade also stressed the importance of learning as an adaptive process, advocating for teamwork, focus, attention to detail, and listening skills.
“We win by teaming; we lose by default,” he said, highlighting the importance of collaboration in achieving school goals.
He also emphasized listening to all perspectives and warned against neglecting small details that can impact overall success.
In his discussion on Bloom’s Taxonomy, Kolade described it as a vital tool for assessing students’ understanding, revealing active versus passive learners, and determining appropriate levels of engagement.
Dr. Nelson Ayodele’s session focused on the pivotal role of customer service in attracting and retaining parents.
“A satisfied customer is the best business strategy,” Ayodele stated, underscoring the necessity of integrating customer care into the school system as a shared responsibility among all staff members.
He described customer service as the “nerve center” of a school, crucial for maintaining relationships with parents, who he described as “the most important visitors” and an integral part of the organization.
Ayodele stressed the need for prompt responses to customer complaints, viewing them as opportunities for improvement.
“In customer service, feedback is the breakfast of champions. Always pray for customers to complain,” he advised, emphasizing the importance of communication and listening skills.
“Customers don’t care about how much you know until they know how much you care,” he concluded, reminding staff of the importance of exceeding customer expectations to build lasting relationships.
Mrs. Faseyitan Adenike contributed a session on effective teaching methodologies that drive academic success.
She emphasized the importance of setting a tone at the beginning of lessons to command respect and ensure student concentration.
“Setting a tone will enable the teacher to command respect, and the students will concentrate,” she noted.
Adenike advised teachers to demonstrate care, maintain a knowledge edge over students, and assert control over their lessons, all of which contribute to successful educational outcomes.
