Hoodlums hace launched a violent attack on a government task force and traders at the Bukuru market in Jos South Local Government Area. The chaos, which led to the tragic loss of one life and the destruction of numerous vehicles on Monday, has drawn stern condemnation from Governor Caleb Mutfwang.
Governor Mutfwang, addressing the state through a statement by his director of press and public affairs, Gyang Bere, expressed profound regret over the violence. He described the actions of the miscreants as “shameful” and vowed to ensure they are brought to justice.
The task force, engaged in enforcing the executive order on urban renewal, was targeted alongside traders in the market.
The governor emphasized that the Bukuru market was designated by the government to support lawful business activities and urged street vendors to relocate there to avoid similar conflicts.
“I wish to express my deepest regret over the shameful action of these miscreants, who not only targeted the task force but also endangered the lives of traders,” Mutfwang stated. “This market is designated by the government to accommodate lawful business activities, so I appeal to street vendors to relocate accordingly.”
Mutfwang condemned the reckless behavior of the attackers, who were armed with dangerous weapons, looted shops, and set vehicles ablaze, harming innocent traders in the process. He declared such actions unacceptable and avoidable, calling for immediate compliance with Executive Order 003, which aims to prevent Jos metropolis from becoming a slum and a haven for criminal activities.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to tackle troublemakers decisively, Mutfwang called on security agencies to quickly apprehend the perpetrators and ensure they face justice. He also urged religious and community leaders in the affected area to guide their followers against unlawful activities and take proactive measures to prevent criminal elements from exploiting such situations.
The governor extended his condolences to those whose properties were destroyed in the incident and promised to foster a peaceful and secure environment across all levels in Plateau State.
