Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State addressed Nigerian youth on the importance of informed decision-making and responsible use of new media during the 1st Kwara Adolescents and Youth Intellectual Summit 2024, held in Ilorin on Tuesday.
Represented by Commissioner for Water Resources Usman Yunusa Lade, Governor AbdulRazaq emphasised the pivotal role of youth in shaping the future of the nation.
The Summit, themed “Empowering Tomorrow, Transforming Perspectives, Healing Minds and Shaping Governance,” was a platform for engaging discussions and technical sessions aimed at empowering the youth.
“As you move from adolescence to youth and full adulthood, I want you to make informed choices and take full responsibility for who you want to be and the kind of country you would like to call your fatherland,” stated the Governor.
He urged the youth to prioritise education, personal development, hard work, honesty, and ethical values, as these choices would determine their future and the future of the nation.
Recognizing the digital savvy of today’s youth, AbdulRazaq encouraged them to utilize technology responsibly.
“Make your virtual communities more conducive for all to coexist, devoid of bullying and other toxic behaviors,” he advised.
He also emphasised the importance of exploring the physical world beyond the screens of new media.
The summit was attended by several dignitaries including the Kwara First Lady, Ambassador Olufolake AbdulRazaq, state parliamentarians, and Cabinet members. It was organized by the Ministry of Youth Development and the Office of Special Adviser on Youth Engagement, Hon. Muhammed Attairu.
Commissioner for Youth Development, Nafisat Musa Buge, highlighted the importance of providing an enabling environment for youth creativity and self-expression. She commended the Governor for his commitment to youth development and empowerment.
In her remarks, Ambassador Olufolake AbdulRazaq assured the youth of her office’s continuous support in promoting programs that help them realize their potential and become instruments of positive change. “Use this digital age as a positive tool to give you a unique perspective and a set of skills that will be invaluable,” she advised.
The summit also featured keynote addresses by National Youth Leader for APC, Hon. Dayo Israel, and 14-year old Deputy Speaker for Nigerian Children Parliament, Rt. Hon. Ibrahim Zannu Sumonu, among other dignitaries.
Hon. Dayo Israel encouraged the youth to remain focused and determined in pursuing their dreams, noting, “If you are focused and determined, no matter the challenges, you will get there and the sky is the beginning of your success.”
Governor AbdulRazaq concluded by urging the youth to reflect on the Summit’s theme and to create mutually supportive circles of friends. He encouraged them to explore opportunities on the internet and social media while also engaging in agriculture and seeking help when needed.
The governor thanked all those who contributed to the success of the Summit and reiterated his commitment to empowering the youth of Kwara State.
