In a bid to enhance security measures and address rising concerns over criminal activities, the Lagos State Government (LASG) has initiated a removal order targeting kiosk owners and shanty dwellers in specific areas of Agege.This directive, led by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Adegoke Fayoade, was executed yesterday by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) alongside officials from the Agege Local Government Council.
The targeted areas identified for the 5-day removal notice include sections under the Agege Under Bridge, setbacks along Isokoko Road, Shiaba Railway, and Mangoro Road. These locations have become hotspots for criminal activities, serving as escape routes for perpetrators who target motorists and pedestrians, particularly during nighttime and dawn hours.Hon. Ganiyu Egunjobi, the Chairman of Agege Local Government, emphasized that the continued presence of dwellers and traders in these areas has significantly impeded law enforcement efforts to combat security challenges.
He stressed the necessity of proactive measures, highlighting that repetitive approaches without substantial change yield minimal results.Following a meeting held on Friday, March 15th, 2024, involving traders, dwellers, and stakeholders of the affected areas, an agreement was reached to vacate these locations after the Ramadan period. However, recent security concerns have prompted the implementation of the removal order ahead of schedule.Egunjobi assured that once the shanties and kiosks are cleared, relevant government agencies will take possession of these areas to prevent reoccupation and deter criminal elements from exploiting these locations.
This strategic action underscores the LASG’s commitment to safeguarding public safety and addressing security challenges within Agege, prioritizing community engagement and proactive measures to maintain law and order in the affected neighborhoods.
