The Zone 2 Police in Lagos State have arrested and subsequently dismissed two police inspectors, Inspector Ogunleye Stephen and Inspector Sunday Adetoye, for their involvement in armed robbery, corruption, and illegal duty.
The police are also in hot pursuit of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ajayi Victor, believed to be a key figure in the criminal activities.
The dismissed officers, already facing trial for previous similar offenses, allegedly invaded the home of a man in the Obada Oko area of Ogun State.
The trio, armed with two SMG rifles and live ammunition, reportedly made off with a significant haul, including iPhones, Samsung smartphones, Tecno smartphones, and laptop computers.
Confirming the dismissal, the new spokesperson for Zone 2 Police, SP Umma Ayuba, stated, “The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command has ordered the dismissal of the two officers for armed robbery, official corruption, and illegal duty.”
The incident took place on November 23, 2023, at around 2200hrs, as the officers, accompanied by three others, executed the illegal operation.
ASP Ajayi Victor, who allegedly led the criminal activity, remains at large, adding an element of urgency to the ongoing investigation.
The police have mounted a roadblock after receiving information from other residents, leading to the apprehension of the occupants of the vehicle, excluding ASP Ajayi Victor.
AIG Ari Muhammed Ali, in charge of Zone 2, has directed that the dismissed officers be charged to court alongside the civilians involved. He emphasized the commitment of the current Nigeria Police Force management, led by IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, to eradicate unprofessional and corrupt practices.
A stern warning was issued to all officers and men to adhere to the law, with accountability emphasized for any wrongdoing.
Members of the public were implored to report any unprofessional conduct of officers and men, as the police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the community while upholding the highest standards of professionalism.
