The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has released its official selection criteria for athletes competing at next month’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
In a statement signed by AFN Secretary-General, Israel Inwang, the federation said only athletes who meet the Entry Standard or rank among the top 20 in the World Ranking Quota will be eligible for selection.
According to the AFN, the new guidelines—effective immediately—are designed to ensure that only committed and high-performing athletes represent Nigeria at major international events, while fostering team spirit and collective responsibility.
“All stakeholders must ensure full compliance with these directives,” the statement read, reaffirming the federation’s commitment to supporting dedicated athletes who combine athletic excellence with exemplary professional conduct.
The AFN also stressed its determination to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and discipline in Nigerian athletics. Athletes have until August 24, 2025, to achieve the qualifying marks or secure a top-20 world ranking. The final Nigerian team list will be published after the deadline.
