In a dramatic move that has rocked Edo State’s political landscape, the Edo State House of Assembly has voted to suspend the chairmen and vice chairmen of all 18 local government councils in the state for a period of two months.
This decision comes in response to a petition from Governor Monday Okpebholo, who accused the local government leaders of “insubordination and gross misconduct” for their refusal to submit financial records.
Governor Okpebholo’s letter to the Assembly detailed the serious nature of the council leaders’ actions, urging lawmakers to take decisive action against what he termed a disregard for authority and fiscal responsibility.
The suspension resolution was passed following a motion moved by Isibor Adeh, representing Esan North East One, and seconded by Donald Okogbe of Akoko-Edo Two. During the debate, 14 members voted in favor of the suspension, six opposed, and three abstained from the vote.
Speaker of the House, Blessing Agbebaku, ensured that all members had the opportunity to address the issue before proceeding with the headcount. The suspension also included a directive for legislative leaders within the councils to assume leadership duties during the two-month period.
This unprecedented action underscores the state’s commitment to enforcing transparency and accountability within local government structures, while sending a strong message to all political office holders about the importance of adhering to governance standards.
