The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has firmly denied claims that it approved a herbal product suggesting smoking could be made “healthy.”
The misinformation, spread through a viral social media video, falsely alleged that a product named Lung Detox Tea or Lungitox (Smokers Pride) received NAFDAC’s endorsement.
In a statement issued on December 14, 2024, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, categorically refuted the claim, declaring it “false and completely unfounded.” The agency clarified that the product had been submitted for registration but was immediately rejected due to its “unsubstantiated and dangerous claim.”
Prof. Adeyeye emphasized NAFDAC’s commitment to public health, stating, “We condemn any attempt to mislead or endanger the public with false claims.” She assured Nigerians that NAFDAC only approves products that are “safe, effective, and scientifically substantiated.”
