The Centre for Disability and Inclusion Africa, in partnership with the Ogun State chapter of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), is set to host an event to commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) 2024.
The event will take place on Thursday, 5 December 2024, at the Justice Fati Lami Recreation Centre for the Disabled, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta, Ogun State (formerly known as the Women Development Centre).
The gathering is expected to draw high-level participation from senior officials of the Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, prominent leaders, and members of the disability and inclusion ecosystem in the state, alongside other key stakeholders.
Expressing enthusiasm about the event, Yinka Olaito, Executive Director of the Centre for Disability and Inclusion Africa, said:
“We are thrilled about this partnership and the opportunity to spotlight critical conversations around disability issues in Ogun State. While the state enacted its Disability Law in 2017, much progress is yet to be seen. Like in other regions, barriers remain significant, and we hope this dialogue will pave the way for full implementation and highlight areas for improvement.”
Echoing this sentiment, Dr Michael Ebonhor, Chairman of JONAPWD, Ogun State, remarked:
“This conversation is timely and essential. Our chapter recognises the urgent need to discuss the efficient implementation of the state’s disability legislation and to task stakeholders on practical steps forward.
This event, forming part of the activities marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2024, is crucial to advancing our advocacy efforts.”
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed annually on 3 December, aims to:
Promote the rights and well-being of individuals with disabilities.
Raise awareness of their experiences and challenges in all areas of life.
Recognise and learn from the lived experiences of persons with disabilities.
