In a move to bolster local agricultural production and ensure public health, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reiterated the ban on importing, distributing, and selling frozen chicken, turkey, and catfish in Nigeria.
The agency made this known during a sensitisation programme held at the Kado Fish Market in Abuja. The event, targeting frozen food sellers, underscored the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting locally produced goods and supporting local farmers.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe, NAFDAC Director for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), emphasized the need for traders to uphold safety standards. He urged them to ensure proper storage of frozen products to maintain their quality and safety.
“Traders must prioritize buying locally produced and NAFDAC-registered goods to comply with regulations and support our economy,” Azikiwe said.
Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed, Chairman of the Abuja Fish and Frozen Food Sellers Association, pledged the cooperation of its members with NAFDAC’s directives.
“We assure NAFDAC of our members’ compliance with these guidelines. However, we urge the agency to enforce these measures fairly to ensure a level playing field,” he remarked.
The programme is part of NAFDAC ongoing efforts to enforce food safety regulations while promoting the consumption of locally produced goods in Nigeria.
