The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has commissioned 109 personnel as the pioneer Armed Squad of the anti-graft agency. The ceremony, held at the Aguiyi Ironsi Cantonment in Abuja on Wednesday, marked a significant milestone in the Commission’s efforts to enhance its operational capacity in tackling corruption.
The approval for the ICPC to bear arms, granted by the Federal Government through the Office of the National Security Adviser, underscores the government’s commitment to equipping the Commission with the necessary tools to combat corruption and related offences.
Speaking at the event, ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, represented by the Director of Operations, Mr. Shehu Yahaya, commended the graduands for their resilience and dedication during the rigorous one-month training.
“To the pioneer officers of the Commission standing before us today, I congratulate you on this milestone achievement. Completing the armed squad training is no mean feat. It is a testament to your resilience, discipline, and unwavering commitment to excellence,” Dr. Aliyu said.
He urged the newly commissioned officers to embody the core values of loyalty, integrity, courage, and professionalism in their roles, adding that true leadership is about earning respect and building trust.
Brigadier-General A.O. Onasanya, Commander of the Guards Brigade, highlighted the importance of the training as part of a broader government initiative to bolster law enforcement agencies.
“As officers of the ICPC, you have a crucial role in promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance in our nation. The training has equipped you with the skills and values essential for success in your careers,” he stated.
The Commanding Officer of the 177 Guards Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel A.B. Inuwa, noted that the training covered weapon handling, physical fitness, first aid, leadership skills, and live firing exercises. He praised the officers for their discipline and exceptional performance throughout the programme
The event’s high point was the presentation of certificates to the graduands and merit awards to the best trainees and top shooters. The officers are now part of an elite group of law enforcement agents prepared to tackle corruption with professionalism and integrity.
The commissioning of this armed squad marks a transformative step for the ICPC, as the Commission enhances its capability to uphold transparency, accountability, and good governance in Nigeria.
