A boat tragedy along the Dambo-Ebuchi waterways of the River Niger in Kupa Local Government Area has left the nation in mourning. The incident, which occurred on November 29, 2024, involved over 160 passengers. While 24 survivors have been rescued, many remain unaccounted for.
In a press release, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun expressed his condolences to the government and people of Kogi State, particularly the bereaved families.
Reacting to the incident, the IGP directed the Force Marine Officer to launch an immediate and thorough investigation to determine the cause of the tragedy. The findings aim to uncover contributing factors and inform strategies to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in enhancing safety on waterways, ensuring justice for victims, and mitigating future risks through strengthened collaborations and proactive measures,” the IGP stated.
To ensure the swift rescue of those still missing, resources and operational frameworks have been mobilized. The IGP assured Nigerians that the police are coordinating with relevant agencies to intensify search and rescue operations.
“The Police Force is unwavering in its commitment to collaborate with stakeholders in adopting and enforcing critical safety measures to protect passengers and operators alike,” the release emphasized.
The IGP appealed to waterway operators, boat owners, and stakeholders to work closely with the Force Marine Department. He urged them to adopt stringent safety protocols to safeguard lives and prevent avoidable tragedies on Nigeria’s waterways.
