President Bola Tinubu commended the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for the successful revival of the Port Harcourt refinery.
The landmark achievement was marked by the commencement of petroleum product loading on November 26, 2024, a crucial moment for Nigeria’s domestic energy production.
Expressing gratitude, President Tinubu acknowledged the efforts of former President Muhammadu Buhari for launching the comprehensive refinery rehabilitation plan, setting the groundwork for today’s success. The President also extended his thanks to the African Export-Import Bank for its essential financing, which demonstrated confidence in the long-term impact of the project.
In his remarks, President Tinubu praised NNPCL’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Mele Kyari, for his “unwavering dedication and commitment” that proved pivotal in overcoming various challenges.
With Port Harcourt now operational, the President has called on NNPCL to fast-track the reactivation of the Warri and Kaduna refineries, along with the second unit of the Port Harcourt facility. “These efforts will significantly enhance domestic production capacity,” Tinubu noted, as they align with the contributions of privately-owned refineries. He added that Nigeria’s gas sector is also receiving “unprecedented attention” from his administration, setting the country on a path to becoming a major energy hub in the region.
President Tinubu underscored the importance of repairing the nation’s refineries, with a commitment to reversing “the disheartening perception of Nigeria as a major crude oil producer that lacks the ability to refine its own resources for domestic consumption.”
Calling for a spirit of patience, integrity, and accountability in the process of rebuilding Nigeria’s infrastructure, the President urged citizens, institutions, and leaders to uphold their duties with dedication and trust.
Aligned with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Tinubu reiterated his vision for shared economic prosperity, energy self-sufficiency, and a future where Nigeria not only secures its energy needs but boosts export capacity. This development marks a hopeful new chapter for Nigeria’s energy landscape and economic resilience.
