Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved the creation of a 14-member State Assets Verification Committee to scrutinize the administration of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.
The probe aims to enhance transparency and accountability in the governance of Edo State by verifying assets and liabilities left behind by the Obaseki administration.
Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okpebholo, announced the committee’s formation in a statement on Sunday, noting that its inauguration is scheduled for Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at Government House in Benin City.
The committee will be chaired by Dr. Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe, with Anslem Ojezua serving as deputy chairman and Frank Edebor as secretary.
“In furtherance of the governor’s initiative to set the state on the path of development and accountable leadership, the establishment of a State Assets Verification Committee has become imperative,” read the statement. The governor’s office explained that despite repeated calls for a comprehensive inventory of state assets and liabilities, “the Godwin Obaseki-led government provided only scanty and limited information.”
Governor Okpebholo, committed to his campaign pledge of ensuring “probity, accountability, and transparency in governance,” selected a diverse committee comprising respected members of Edo State to undertake the investigation. The committee includes Kassim Afegbua, Patrick Ikhariale, Taiwo Akerele, Patrick Idiake, and Rasaq Bello-Osagie. Additional members are Fredrick Unopah, Abdallah Eugenia, Patrick Obahiagbon, Kenny Okojie, Lyndsey Tes-Sorae, and Abass Braimoh.
The panel’s mandate involves conducting a thorough review of state assets to ensure an accurate account of government property. With its findings, the committee hopes to provide clarity on Edo’s asset base, addressing any gaps left by the previous administration. This move underscores Governor Okpebholo’s commitment to transparency and responsible governance as he seeks to position Edo State on a stronger foundation for development.
