In a powerful statement at the G20 Summit in Brazil, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu underscored Nigeria’s commitment to combating global hunger, poverty, and inequality.
His message highlighted both Nigeria’s contributions to international causes and its ambitious domestic agenda, expressing optimism for what collaborative global leadership could achieve.
“The conversations at the G20 Brazil Summit have once again highlighted the immense opportunities for global collaboration to tackle our shared challenges. I am therefore filled with renewed hope for Nigeria, Africa, and the world,” Tinubu wrote. His remarks reinforced Nigeria’s endorsement of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, an initiative led by Brazilian President Lula da Silva, which he described as a step toward addressing “one of humanity’s greatest challenges.”
Tinubu emphasized that Nigeria’s support of this initiative reflects its own goals: “This commitment aligns with our agenda to eradicate poverty and hunger, advance Sustainable Development Goals, and provide opportunities for all Nigerians.”
Beyond the alliance, Tinubu championed reforms to global institutions to ensure fairer representation, specifically urging changes within the United Nations Security Council and the G20.
“I also reaffirmed our advocacy for reforming global institutions, including the United Nations Security Council and G20, to ensure fairness and inclusivity, with Nigeria, and Africa rightfully taking their place in global decision-making,” he stated.
On the economic front, Tinubu expressed Nigeria’s dedication to creating a balanced global tax system and a financial framework that addresses disparities between the Global North and South.
Domestically, he assured Nigerians of the administration’s efforts to alleviate economic burdens: “At home, while seeking to expand our tax base without necessarily increasing the tax burden on Nigerians, our administration is also focused on reducing hardship, expanding opportunities, improving infrastructure, and strengthening our education and social safety nets — all essential for rebuilding the foundations of a stable, resilient, and prosperous Nigeria.”
He concluded his message on a note of solidarity, emphasizing the collective potential of global action: “This summit reaffirms that when the world works together, we can create a more equitable and sustainable world. Nigeria is ready to lead, collaborate, and contribute meaningfully to global progress.”
