Prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has called on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to step away from presidential contests and embrace the role of a statesman.
Speaking at a press conference held in Abuja George emphasized that Atiku, who will be 81 years old in 2027, has made several attempts to secure the presidency without success. He urged him to focus on mentoring younger leaders rather than pursuing another bid.
Chief George highlighted that Atiku’s consistent participation in presidential elections dates back to 1993, spanning over three decades.
While acknowledging Atiku’s contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape, he stressed the importance of yielding space to the next generation.
According to him, this would align with the principles of renewal and progress that the party and the nation need at this time.
In his words, George remarked, “My advice to Atiku is this: you will be 81 years old in 2027, and you have been contesting for the presidency since 1993.
It is time for you to calm down and act like an elder.” He called for reflection and a shift in focus from personal ambition to the broader interests of the PDP and the country.
The elder statesman also pointed to the growing sentiment among Nigerians advocating for leadership rejuvenation.
He urged Atiku to leverage his experience and position to build a stronger party framework, mentor emerging leaders, and contribute to shaping a brighter future for the nation. He noted that this transition would cement Atiku’s legacy as a respected elder statesman.
This statement by Chief George comes amid ongoing discussions within the PDP about its direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
