Ja’afaru Buba, the husband of a female student at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, has petitioned the university authorities to investigate a lecturer he accused of sexually harassing his wife.
During a press briefing in Bauchi, Buba stated that his legal representatives had submitted a petition to the university’s Vice Chancellor.
Copies were also sent to the Head of the Chemical Engineering Department and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in Bauchi.
The petition alleges that the lecturer, identified as Dr. Usman Mohammed, abused his position by making inappropriate advances toward the woman, a Master’s student in Chemical Engineering, and threatened to fail her if she did not comply with his demands.
According to the petition filed by Barrister Mohammed Sani, the lecturer sent suggestive WhatsApp messages to the student and invited her to his office multiple times.
The student, who refused his advances, reportedly faced threats of academic sabotage.
Sani further stated that the lecturer’s behavior violated the university’s code of conduct and called for a discreet investigation.
The petition included copies of alleged WhatsApp conversations between the lecturer and the student.
In response, Dr. Mohammed denied the allegations and revealed he had filed a defamation lawsuit at the Bauchi State High Court. He declined further comment, citing the ongoing legal case.
Meanwhile, ATBU’s Public Relations Officer, Zailani Bappah, stated that he was unaware of the petition but would confirm with the university management.
