In a late-night operation, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) arrested a man caught vandalizing an electronic road sign on the Five Star Bridge in Oshodi.
The suspect, 30-year-old Lekan Olanrewaju, was detained around 2:00 a.m. last Wednesday as he attempted to remove battery cables from the critical traffic safety device.
The electronic road signs on the bridge are vital for cautioning drivers to reduce speed when approaching the inward Apapa end of the bridge. Just one week earlier, another road sign battery had been stolen in the area, heightening concerns over infrastructure vandalism.
Commander of the Rapid Response Squad, CSP Shola Jejeloye, had recently bolstered patrols in the vicinity to curb traffic robberies and prevent damage to public infrastructure. The proactive measures led to Olanrewaju’s arrest, with authorities recovering battery cables and a pair of pliers from the suspect.
Following his arrest, Olanrewaju was charged in court and sentenced to one and a half years in prison.
