In a striking condemnation of the current administration, former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar has voiced his outrage over a disturbing video depicting malnourished children being arraigned before a Federal High Court.

The orders for this controversial action reportedly come from the Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government.

Abubakar describes the video as “a horrible scene reminiscent of a Nazi concentration camp,” highlighting what he perceives as a lack of regard for the lives of vulnerable children by the government.

He emphasizes that such actions starkly contradict Section 11 of the Child’s Rights Act, which guarantees the dignity of every child, ensuring they are not subjected to injury, abuse, neglect, or degrading treatment.

The children, who have been detained for their alleged involvement in the #EndBadGovernance protests held from August 1 to August 10, 2024, have only now been arraigned three months later. This delay, according to Abubakar, raises serious concerns about the dehumanizing conditions they have likely endured during detention.

Expressing his disapproval, Abubakar states, “I find it reprehensible that a man who claims to have fought for Nigeria’s democracy and had led protests now demonises those who decide to demonstrate against the effects of his harsh and draconian policies.”

He further argues that children, particularly those most affected by these policies, have every constitutional right to protest peacefully. “A nation can be assessed by the way it treats its most vulnerable citizens,” he asserts, lamenting that even underage children are not spared from what he describes as the government’s “wickedness.”

Abubakar concludes by noting that the dire condition of the accused children starkly underscores the very reasons for their protest participation, highlighting the urgent need for governmental introspection and reform.
