Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has officially launched the ambitious Project Ten Million today, aimed at screening a staggering 196,913 residents for hypertension and diabetes.
The event took place at the State Banquet Hall and will run from October 27 to November 3, 2024.
Governor AbdulRazaq, represented by his Deputy, Mr. Kayode Alabi, emphasized the pressing health challenges posed by hypertension and diabetes, which affect millions globally.
He stated, “These silent diseases are posing significant risks to our communities, hence the need for a free screening programme for hypertension and diabetes for the residents of the state.”
Highlighting the importance of health as a fundamental right, the Governor affirmed his administration’s commitment to combating these diseases.
“This administration has been and will continue to take significant steps towards ensuring that every citizen has easy access to the resources they need to live a healthy life,” he added.
The screening initiative is designed not only to detect these conditions but also to raise awareness and educate the public on prevention and management strategies.
“Through this screening programme, we seek to raise awareness, offer free screening, and provide education on prevention and management,” the Governor explained.
He urged the people of Kwara to actively participate in the program, stressing the importance of breaking the cycle of ignorance and stigma surrounding these health issues.
“Together, we can promote a proactive approach to health,” he stated.
In addition to the screening, Governor AbdulRazaq urged residents to embrace healthier lifestyle choices, including proper nutrition, regular exercise, and routine health check-ups.
He expressed gratitude to healthcare professionals, community organizations, and volunteers for their dedication in bringing this initiative to fruition.
First Lady of Kwara State and Founder of the Ajike Foundation, Amb. Prof. Olufolake AbdulRazaq, echoed the Governor’s sentiments, stressing the state government’s commitment to the health of its citizens. She highlighted the crucial role of early detection and timely treatment, stating,
“Residents must prioritize their wellbeing by knowing their blood pressure and blood sugar count to avert incidents of sudden death.”
Dr. Amina El-Imam, the Commissioner for Health, elaborated on the initiative, revealing that Project Ten Million is part of a national effort endorsed by the Nigeria Health Commissioner’s Forum and the Nigeria Governor’s Forum.
“The Project aims at screening 10 million Nigerians for hypertension and diabetes across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory,” she noted.
The initiative garnered support from various stakeholders, including the Speaker of the State Assembly, Rt. Honorable Yakubu Salihu Danladi, represented by Hon. Abdulkareem Musa, who pledged the House’s commitment to raise awareness within their constituencies.
Hon. Razaq Owolabi, Chairman of the House Committee on Health and Environment, commended the Governor for prioritizing public health, assuring full cooperation from the State House of Assembly in promoting the wellbeing of Kwarans.
Development partners and other stakeholders lauded the Kwara State government’s proactive approach to health, pledging ongoing support for initiatives aimed at enhancing the health of residents.
