In an outcry for justice and accountability, the Youth Rights Campaign (YRC) has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, following reports of his brutal assault on a Bolt driver in Abuja.
The incident, which has sparked widespread condemnation, involved Ikwechegh allegedly attacking the driver and making threats to “make him disappear from Nigeria.”
The YRC, an advocacy group committed to human rights, has labeled the actions of Ikwechegh as disgraceful.
In a statement issued by the group’s National Secretary, Francis Nwapa, the YRC not only demanded legal action against the lawmaker but also called for his recall by his constituents in the Aba North and South Federal Constituency of Abia State.
Nwapa expressed the group’s indignation in a post on X, stating, “@Alex Ikewechegh Mascot the Abia House of Rep. Member Who slapped, arrested a bolt driver for no reason. These oppressors at all levels across tribe, religion & gender must be tamed. We Demand his arrest, prosecution & recall by constituency. He’s a disgrace & not a resemblance of.”
The incident came to light through a viral video shared on social media, where Ikwechegh was seen assaulting the e-hailing taxi driver who had arrived at the lawmaker’s residence in Abuja for a delivery.
The footage shows Ikwechegh repeatedly slapping the driver, refusing to pay for the service, and boasting about his position in the House of Representatives. He further threatened the driver with dire consequences, dismissing any potential intervention by law enforcement.
As the video circulated, public outrage grew, with many calling for accountability and justice for the assaulted driver. The YRC’s demand for the lawmaker’s trial and potential recall highlights a broader call for ethical conduct and respect for human rights among public officials.
The case underscores the urgent need for mechanisms that hold leaders accountable for their actions, ensuring they truly represent the values and interests of their constituents.
