Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the 2023 general election, expressed grave concerns over the relentless wave of killings, kidnappings, and violent crimes sweeping across the nation.
“The never-ending incidents of killings, kidnappings, and other violent crimes across the country have continued to be of concern to many,” Obi lamented. “The situation has continued unabated and is worse by the day.”
Obi highlighted the escalating threat posed by non-state actors, who have been inflicting “pain and sorrow on families whose loved ones are often kidnapped and sometimes killed in gruesome manners.”
A recent tragic incident that drew Obi’s condemnation was the ambush attack on Supersports TV crew members along the Ihiala-Orlu Road in Anambra State.
“I condemn, in totality, the unfortunate killing of some crew members of Supersports TV,” Obi stated. The media professionals were en route to Uyo for official duties when they were ambushed, resulting in fatalities and the kidnapping of others.
In addition to this tragedy, Obi referenced another violent attack that occurred two days prior in the Agatu local government area of Benue State, where several individuals were killed and others injured by criminal elements.
“These violent attacks, many of which go unreported, have now continued to define our daily existence in our once-secured nation,” Obi remarked, emphasizing the tragic normalization of violence in Nigeria.
“We are gradually losing count of the people who have lost their lives to insecurity in our nation.”
Obi’s statement concluded with a heartfelt condolence to the bereaved families and a call to action:
“How much longer do we allow our people to die before we decide enough is enough? I condole with the families who have lost dear ones to these recent attacks while praying for eternal rest on the dead and quick recovery for the injured. We are all in this together as a nation and will continue to demand for the security of lives and property of every Nigerian.”
