The family of Muslim Adewale, a 17-year-old boy who achieved the highest West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) result in Lagos Education District Six, has received a much-needed financial boost through a scholarship award worth ₦500,000.
Muslim, a graduate of Birch Freeman Senior High School in Surulere, Lagos, excelled academically, scoring 6 As, 1 B3, and 2 C4 in his WASSCE, as well as an impressive 302 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Despite these accomplishments, his family, struggling with financial constraints, was uncertain how they would fund his education at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), where he hopes to study Computer Science.
His father, Mr. Rasheed Adewale, works as a commercial bus driver, while his mother, Mrs. Rasheedat Adewale, sells sachet water to support the family. Both parents, despite not having pursued education beyond secondary school, have prioritised their children’s education, even sacrificing personal needs to ensure their son and his sister, who studies at Lagos State University (LASU), can pursue higher education.
Muslim’s scholarship was awarded during the annual merit awards event held by Lagos Education District 6, which celebrates the achievements of students, teachers, and school administrators.
The scholarship, sponsored by God’s Covenant Church of All Nations, Ikeja, comes as a welcome relief for the Adewale family, easing the financial strain and allowing them to focus on their children’s future.
Muslim expressed his gratitude, stating that the scholarship would significantly lighten the load on his parents as he embarks on his university journey.
He also hopes for further support from public and private organisations to help him fulfil his dreams of becoming a computer scientist.
