As the collation of results from the Kwara State local government elections continues, early reports indicate a strong performance by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which has reportedly secured 13 out of 16 local government areas (LGAs) thus far. In stark contrast, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is facing challenges, with reports suggesting they have yet to win a single ward.
The APC’s victory extends to over 100 councillorship seats that have been collated so far, with more results pending official announcement by the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC), in accordance with electoral regulations.
However, the election process has not been without controversy. Allegations have surfaced regarding results declared by an unrecognized individual.
In response, KWSIEC Press Secretary Lasisi Abosede issued a statement urging the public to disregard these unofficial results. He clarified, “The Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC) wishes to disown some election results purportedly released for Oju Ekun Sarumi Ward. The individual who announced the results has neither the authority nor the competence for such an announcement as he is not a recognized returning officer of KWSIEC. Therefore, members of the public are invited to disregard such results.”
Abosede further reassured citizens, stating, “KWSIEC assures the public that official results will be announced through authorized channels and urges citizens to remain calm and disregard any unverified information circulating on social media.”
Local observers have praised the 2024 Kwara State local government polls, characterizing them as peaceful, free, fair, and credible.
However, delays in the official announcement of results are attributed to the ongoing collation of data from remote areas of the state, according to reliable sources.
