Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have apprehended two women, Ujunwa Una and Chinelo Igbechionwu, for their alleged involvement in a conspiracy to sell newborn twins. The suspects were intercepted by patrol officers from the Ojodu Division at Berger bus-stop, a key entrance into Lagos State, following a tip-off from a vigilant Good Samaritan.
The dramatic arrest unfolded on September 9, 2024, when the officers discovered the suspects in possession of two newborn baby girls, estimated to be just six days old. Investigations revealed that the women were en route from Abia State, intending to deliver the infants to a nurse in Lagos, as arranged by the babies’ mother.
Upon interrogation, the suspects confessed to the heinous act. They disclosed that they were offered a sum of One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (₦150,000) for the transportation of the babies. The suspects further revealed that the infants were sold by their mother due to her inability to provide them with proper care.
The situation prompted immediate action, with the case being transferred to the Gender Unit of the Command. The newborns have since been placed in the custody of a motherless babies home, where they will receive proper care and medical evaluation.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working diligently to apprehend any additional conspirators involved in this disturbing case. The arrested suspects were formally arraigned on Thursday, September 19, 2024.
