In a heart-wrenching plea shared on Facebook, the Demi Care Foundation has brought attention to the dire situation of 16-year-old Rita, whose health is rapidly deteriorating following complications from childbirth.
Rita’s mother, visibly shaken and in tears, posted an urgent message: “Please help me to save Rita; her health is failing… complications after childbirth; EMERGENCY.”
According to the foundation, Rita’s nightmare began when she was raped by a storekeeper named Samuel while looking for work.
Although he was arrested, he was later released by the police and has since vanished, leaving Rita and her family to grapple with the consequences of his actions.
Despite the trauma, Rita gave birth two months ago via caesarean section, and after managing to pay her hospital bill, she was discharged home. However, her recovery took a troubling turn.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t know she has been sick since she got home,” her mother lamented. Rita’s condition has worsened significantly; her abdomen has become bloated and hard, her legs and feet are swollen and painful, and she is struggling to breathe.
“She has been unable to eat, breastfeed the baby, and cannot even walk well anymore,” her mother added.
Preliminary medical tests have revealed that Rita is suffering from organ failure, specifically affecting her kidneys.
She was referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikaja, but due to financial constraints, the family was unable to secure the necessary funds for treatment and was forced to return home.
“The family has nothing to even feed the baby,” her mother explained, highlighting the desperate situation.
Rita’s grandmother has been doing her best to care for the newborn, mashing rice and providing semolina as makeshift nourishment.
“Please, we wish to mobilize her to LASUTH emergency immediately and also get ready for the multiple tests, scans, and what may be recommended. We NEED Your Help to Save RITA!! This will be another success story. Please help,” the foundation implores.
