The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down an illegal sachet water production facility in Apapa, Lagos.
The unauthorized factory, located at No. 89 Marine Road, Oluwole Market Waterside, was uncovered during a targeted enforcement operation led by NAFDAC’s Investigation & Enforcement Directorate.
Upon inspection, it was revealed that the factory’s address did not match the location printed on the packaging of the counterfeit sachet water products, highlighting the deceptive practices employed by the operators.
The enforcement team discovered thousands of bags of counterfeit sachet water being produced in unsanitary conditions, situated alarmingly close to a contaminated canal.
This environment posed significant health risks to consumers. During the raid, over 2,500 bags of these products were seized, and the remaining stock was immediately destroyed on-site to prevent any further distribution.
In addition to sealing off the illegal premises, NAFDAC dismantled and removed all production equipment, effectively halting operations. The estimated street value of the confiscated water is reported to exceed ₦1 million, which reflects the scale of the illicit operation.
NAFDAC is urging the public to exercise caution when purchasing packaged water and to report any suspicious activities to the nearest NAFDAC office.
