President Bola Tinubu administered the oath of office to Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, officially inaugurating her as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria.
The ceremony, which took place at the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja at around 11:40 am on Friday, marked the beginning of Kekere-Ekun’s tenure, though she will be serving in an acting capacity pending Senate confirmation.
Justice Kekere-Ekun’s appointment follows a recommendation by the National Judicial Council (NJC) at its 106th meeting, which was presided over by outgoing Chief Justice, Olukayode Ariwoola. The NJC’s endorsement represents a significant vote of confidence in Kekere-Ekun’s capabilities to lead the nation’s judiciary.
Speaking on her new role, Kekere-Ekun expressed, “I am honored and humbled by this appointment. I look forward to serving the people of Nigeria with integrity and dedication.”
Interestingly, President Tinubu’s itinerary has been quite eventful. Just days before the swearing-in ceremony, he embarked on a short working trip to France, described by his team as a “brief work stay.” Despite the tight schedule, the President returned to Abuja on Friday, August 23, 2024, and arrived at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at approximately 2:25 am, just hours before the inauguration ceremony.
The judicial community and the nation at large are watching closely as Justice Kekere-Ekun steps into this pivotal role, anticipating reforms and a strengthened judiciary under her leadership.
