A student from the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (UST) has found herself at the center of a dramatic breakup after her boyfriend discovered a controversial photo of her from the university Rag Day celebrations.
The relationship, which had been going strong for three years, came to an abrupt end when the boyfriend stumbled upon an image of his girlfriend participating in the annual Rag Day festivities.
Rag Day, traditionally a day for students to dress up in eccentric outfits to raise funds for charity, turned sour when the boyfriend couldn’t reconcile with her appearance in the photo.
The breakup was announced in a heated WhatsApp conversation, where the boyfriend expressed his disbelief and shame.
The exchange, which has since been shared widely on social media, went as follows:
Boyfriend: “What is the meaning of what you did yesterday all in the name of Rag Day?”
Girlfriend: “Hey babe, calm down. It’s just a rag day in school.”
Boyfriend: “What stupid Rag Day? Abi madness day? See ehn, I couldn’t even believe that was you. I’m even scared. Let’s not stress this. I’m not sure this can even work again. I don’t know if I’m dating a mad person. Do you know how many of my friends saw you yesterday?? Did you see yourself? I’m so ashamed of you.”
Girlfriend: “Baby, hold on. Is this a prank or something? We’ve been together for 3 years na. You can’t just break up with me now because of this na… Baby, please don’t do this to me.”
Boyfriend: “This thing called a relationship between us is over. I can’t do it anymore. Goodbye, please.”
The separation has sparked conversations across the university and social media platforms about the pressures of maintaining relationships in the digital age and the impact of societal expectations on personal relationships.
Many students have expressed their support for the girl, condemning the boyfriend’s reaction as overly harsh and insensitive. Others, however, have pointed out the need for mutual respect and understanding in relationships.
